Image
World No Tobacco Day is observed on 31st May every year worldwide to highlight the health and other risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. We all know that smoking is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide and also a key factor in lung cancer, heart attack, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and other health problems. The theme of 2022 is “Protect the environment”, highlighting the environmental impact of tobacco that pollutes the planet and damages the health of the people. Ruby General Hospital runs a ‘Tobacco Cessation Clinic’ which helps smokers who have made a number of attempts to stop smoking before achieving long term abstinence. It is a place where people, with intentions of quitting tobacco may approach and get medical guidance from the team of doctors to help them further. Since tobacco contains nicotine, which is addictive, it makes the process of quitting often very prolonged and difficult.
